This weekend we have appreciation activities with our buddies in victoria junior college. We start our activities at 11 am. Firstly, we show them around U town and have lunch there. They are amazed by the modern buildings and special design of U town. We introduce several seminar rooms that we usually take classes inside. After lunch, we go to kent ridge park that is near west coast. It is a natural park that has beautiful scenery. We walk, chat and appreciate the scenery together. We talk the current things happen in class, and I introduce NUS to them. Although we are exhausted after several hour’s walk, we all enjoy the appreciation activities very much. In the end, I give my buddy the gift that I have prepared and she also gives me gift. All the buddies exchange their gifts and express their will to keep their friendship. I also write a letter for my buddy’s class to thank them for the help they give me. I believe our friendship will exist forever.

First weekend Reflection by Li Yiming
My buddy sends me the photos she takes
during the junior college immersion. Those photos include the birthday
celebration, morning class assembly, practical class and the collective photo
of home visit. Looking at those photos, I realize that junior college immersion
is really precious for me. I miss the classmates in victoria junior college and
I miss the time we spend together. I plan to make a goodbye gift for my buddy
as well as her classmate in memory of my junior college experience. During this
one-week immersion, I know the local students better and I improve my English
there. I receive their kindness and welcome, and I know more about their
customs and culture. Junior college is no only for students to study, but also
for them to improve interaction skills, to improve their empathetic ability,
and to make more friends there. Victoria junior college has many other exchange
programs that enable them to communicate with foreigners. Singaporean students are
willing to make friends with foreign students like us.

Friday Reflection By Liu Hanyang
This week we have joined the JXP program and have a visit in JC. I go to VJC to have a journey. It is a junior college which is far from RVR. In this week, we have to get up early and take buses to our JC. This timetable makes us tried and sleepy in this week. However, the JC life is happy for us. The students in JC are friendly to us. My buddy Douglas is an interesting boy who likes playing Dota 2. In this week, my buddy guides me to visit his school and attend every class. His classmates are also friendly. I have made friends with him and his friends. I feel that their class is like a big family, and I can also feel the harmonious atmosphere among them. They play jokes on each other and talk happily. During break, they will play cards, listen to music and play games. The life in the JC is happy and warm, which makes me remind my high school life. During my high school life, I can have fun with my friends, talk with them and discuss problems, which is important experience in my life. Also, in this week, I find there are some differences between Chinese and Singaporean education system. Chinese one seems busier and heavier than Singaporean ones. Chinese students have to wake up early in the morning and go back home late. They have many lessons and lots of homework. In Singapore, students only have 4 to 5 lessons a day and they have CCA which can train their hobbies. In addition, I find in class, Singaporean education would train more cooperation ability of students, which is important in their future life. The knowledge seems a little easier than Chinese one, but most of them is similar. What’s more, at the end of this week, I have gone out to have dinner together with my JC friends and we talk happily that night. Though it is a tiring week, I think it is meaningful and I learn lots of things, which makes me more familiar with Singapore.
Thursday reflection by Xu Yidong
Today’s PE lesson was quite short—only half
an hour. However, it was quite tiring because it was purely some physical training.
It was like this: students are separate into different teams and each team is
separate into two parts, each part stand on one side of the part of the
playground. One of the teammate in one side is going to rush to the other side
and clap hand with one guy over there to allow him/her to rush to the other
side. All the teams were involved in a competition and the team which won will
have two giant size of “plus 100” as prizes. I thought this was my chance to
show a little bit because I have been practicing distance running for really a
long time. However, after the competition began, I found it was definitely not
the case. After the PE lesson, I reflected and finally found that distance
running is more about improving your endurance while 20m running is about speed
strength. Although I tried my best to accelerate, I owned no advantages.
However, when it comes to the recovery, I found several of my friends still
feel acidic on their legs in the next day while I did not feel tired right
after I finished all the 20m running.
Wednesday Reflection by Xu Yidong
Today, I finally experienced how a PE class
in JC is like. The PE teacher is a young man full of sense of humor and he was
from NUS also. He taught us how to play free spin and managed a competition at
the end of the class. Although I once learned how to play free spin before, I
did not perform well in the competition and made several mistakes. I think I
should have be more active and stand out to lead our team at that time because
I may be the one who knew the free spin best among them. However, I did not do
that, partly because I was still not very familiar with all of them.
My roommate told me that his buddy feel
very surprised that Chinese senior high school students should not have CCA.
Although my roommate explained a lot, he still feel quite confused and mistaken
our PE lessons as our CCA. Since it seems that Singaporean students do not
understand how life could be without CCA, I think I am going to explain this question
more clearly on the presentation on the education system on Friday afternoon.
Monday reflection by Xu Yidong
To be honest, I was not looking forward to going to JC because I was crazy preparing my mid-term test and I am not very comfortable about getting into a completely new place that I do not know well. However, I am sure that this experience is going to be an unforgettable one and I may benefit a lot from it if I do things wisely there
I used to be extremely interested in the how the education system in Singapore looks likes. There are so many differences between the education system in Singapore as well as that in China and I am eager to find them out. The high school education in China is 3+3 while in Singapore that is 4+2. They both have a very important test which has the priority in determining which University students are attending. However, Singaporean students also have CCA and many projects that involve team cooperation, which have nothing to do with the Chinese high school students.
Now I have a very precious chance to get some firsthand information about the education system in secondary school, and know what our peers do and study during their school time. Apart from that, I am happy that I will be assigned a buddy who is going to accompany me during my junior college journey in the next few days, because then I can integrate into the circumstance there better and get an opportunity to know more about a Singaporean young man.
I hope that I can enjoy it and remember to keep a sharp eye on things happening there.
Reflection on Wednesday by Wang Haina
A sad piece of news arrived early in the morning while I was sleeping on the canteen table- my buddy was sick so she could not accompany me today. Anyway, I followed Wyn, the brilliant buddy of Zeng Ni.
For the first time in the week, at 7:45 am, Victorians had their morning assembly. It was a glorious event, a source of pride, solidity and joy. The national anthem of Singapore left me very nice impression as it was full of positive energy. The music was played by the school's orchestra club. Gosh, it reminded me of my days in primary school! Only then did I see an orchestra playing our national anthem. After I entered middle school, boring megaphones did the job.
After that was the National Pledge. The student spoke it at a very fast pace and in very standard English! I wondered why they tend to speak Singlish in daily life when they can actually speak English so well...
The morning assembly was like a news conference. The school leaders talked about the school's excellent A-level results, stirring a huge amount of excitement. Then there were small talks given by various (non-profit) organisations in and out of the school to introduce their missions and ask Victorians to join them. Next, a school leader solemnly pointed out that some students have stolen yearbooks from their schoolmates. And lastly, we NUS VJC visiting group was very honoured to be allowed to go up the stage and say hi to Victorians!
Another remarkable activity today is Wyn's choir training for CCA. One of my SM1 schoolmates was also in the choir!! I learned that the choir in VJC is world-class and in fact ranks 7th in the world. The students are extremely hardworking in the choir, and they are able to learn a song in any language within one hour...
The training was rather boring, they practiced their voiced for half an hour, making sounds like 'mihihihihihihimahahaahhahaha' which did not make any sense. They then began learning a song that was neither in Chinese nor in English and sounded like a ghost breathing. However, I could imagine how beautiful the singing must be when it is finally performed in an elegant concert hall in Ireland. This sent me a clear message: all the shiny, stunning beauty on stage is backed by thousands of boring hours like the ones I endured. And what's more, only unfading passion is able to support one through these painful hours of practice practice and practice...
To excel is a long journey. That's it.
